Pinhass

El Zine El Masrar (الزين المسرار)

ROUICHA - Tichkaphone TCK 1156

December 14, 2021

Pinhass Cohen is undoubtedly one of the greatest stars of Moroccan wedding ceremonies. Born in Place Verdun, a famous Jewish quarter of Casablanca, Pinhass grew up immersed in music. His father, Azar Cohen, was a talented amateur musician and oud player. Although Pinhass pursued studies at an engineering school, his passion for music compelled him to shift to an artistic career. Within a few years he established himself as a proficient singer and arranger. Focusing on the Moroccan popular song book and Chgouri, a popular musical genre associated with the Andalusian expulsion of Jews and Muslims, Pinhass revised old classics by adding more rhythmic energy and contributing his own lyrics. These revisited hits, like "El Zine Li Âtak Allah (الزين لعطاك الله)," quickly rose to the top of the charts leaving most people assuming he was the original author.

Throughout the 80s and 90s, he became a bonafide heartthrob and a must-have wedding performer. Since the early 2000s he gradually retired from the scene and today no longer performs publicly. Pinhass remains in the hearts of all Moroccans as a beloved singer and has earned his spot in the Chaabi hall of fame.

ABOUT MT FOUNDER

Amino Belyamani is a composer and multi-instrumentalist born and raised in Casablanca, Morocco. His music projects reflect a rich diversity of influences: from complex African rhythms and Arabic melodies, to western classical music, electro-acoustic music, and jazz. Amino co-founded the critically acclaimed band Dawn of Midi, whose second studio album Dysnomia received international press and praise. Recent Dawn of Midi performances include the BAUHAUS centennial at The Barbican Centre in London, and opening for Radiohead in two sold-out shows at Madison Square Garden. He is a founding member of Innov Gnawa, a traditional Moroccan trance ensemble, which was nominated for the Best Dance Recording Grammy in 2018 for their track "Bambro Koyo Ganda" on Bonobo's album Migration.

Some of Amino's other projects include the microtonal and hypnotic SSAHHA, Bedstuy Ewe, a traditional Ghanaian drumming group, and Axis Trio, a modern electro-acoustic jazz trio. He has performed with world-renowned artists, including Dimi Mint Abba, Charlie Haden, Albert "Tootie" Heath, Hamid El Kasri, Hassan Hakmoun, Alfred Ladzekpo, and Houman Pourmehdi. Amino currently resides in Brooklyn. His passion for analog technology and traditional music inevitably led to tapes.
