Nass El Ghiwane

Echams Ettalâa (الشمس الطالعة)

ROUICHA - Tichkaphone TCK 1156

September 24, 2020

There are certain artists in this world who are only known for a selection of their works. Then you have groups like Nass El Ghiwane, who are celebrated for their entire anthology. "Echams Ettalâa (الشمس الطالعة)," meaning "The Rising Sun," is one of their early successful EPs released in 1977 that stand the test of time. One can really hear and feel the power of the unity of the ensemble on this record, almost like they were able to channel all of their expressiveness into one voice, especially with a musician like Abderrahmane Paco, who carefully chooses what and when to play. Paco sacrifices the low end by relinquishing his guembri for hand percussion on both the title track "Echams Ettalâa (الشمس الطالعة)" and "Daïyne (ضايعين)," and his guembri performance on the first track "Narjak Ana La M'chite (نرجاك أنا ﻻ مشيت)" is tastefully minimal. Even though the track is centered around the guembri and has occasional Gnawa-inspired gestures, all one can really feel is the power of El Ghiwane.

There is a sublime live cut of "Daïyne (ضايعين)" from the must-see documentary "Trances" which captures the essence, magic, and charisma of the band. Watch until the end of the video when the crowd's possessed ecstasy overwhelms the venue as the band finishes in a spontaneous all-percussion outro. Here is the link.

Some of Amino's other projects include the microtonal and hypnotic SSAHHA, Bedstuy Ewe, a traditional Ghanaian drumming group, and Axis Trio, a modern electro-acoustic jazz trio. He has performed with world-renowned artists, including Dimi Mint Abba, Charlie Haden, Albert "Tootie" Heath, Hamid El Kasri, Hassan Hakmoun, Alfred Ladzekpo, and Houman Pourmehdi.
