Lhoucine Amntag

Milodisk MDK 1061

ROUICHA - Tichkaphone TCK 1156

July 31, 2020

Raïs Lhoucine Amntag, also spelled Amantag, is one of many Rwaïs (plural of Raïs) of the Amarg tradition that preserved and carried the expansive repertoire of Raïs Lhaj Belaïd, who is considered the godfather of the genre. This rich art form is centered around sung poetry, most of which was composed by the late Belaïd, and accompanied by melodic instruments and various percussion. The breathy yet rugged sound of the rebab (bowed fiddle) usually dominates the sonic picture with its very distinct sound and rhythmic ornamental phrasings. Another string instrument used to reinforce the sung words is the loutar, the one Amntag is holding and playing on the album cover. Not to be confused with what is used in the Mid-Atlas Izlan/Zayan genre, this is the high pitched banjo-like instrument one can hear on the tape beautifully complementing the rebab.

Since these poems are written in Tachelhit or Tassoussit (dialect spoken in the Souss region), it is rare to hear a song in Darija (Arabic dialect). Only do we hear it in the fifth and last track on the record, where Amntag sings a song about missing his loved one and wondering when will they be together again.
